Thank you to Allan Trently ’92 for answering our call to share the songs from his era that defined his college experience.
He writes: “I think the one song that defined Alpha Zeta in the early 90s was ‘Friends in Low Places’ by Garth Brooks. I can’t speak for everyone, but I do believe this song did unite the group in ways that other songs did not. On weekends, those that braved the weekend at Penn State (and thus didn’t go home for the weekend) would hit the downtown taverns. The Shandygaff or as it was affectionately called, ‘The Gaff’ was a popular hangout because of the music they played. Some of the songs that I do remember include: ‘Dancing With Myself’ by Generation X; the theme songs from Gilligan’s Island and Hawaii Five-O (which featured a particularly soaking “dance” number); ‘Just Like Heaven’ by The Cure, ‘The Safety Dance’ by Men Without Hats, ‘Sweet Caroline’ by Neil Diamond, ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison, ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’ by Mike d’Abo and Tony Macaulay, and others.
