Historical Update

(Spring 2002)

The early ’40s were a great time to be a member of the
Morrill Chapter of Alpha Zeta, and Howard J. Merrill,
Class of 1942, Ontario, California, provided the following
historical updates that were not mentioned in the campaign
brochure history:

– Several adult members personally signed to guarantee the
loan that made possible the construction of the current house:
Professor “Andy” Bowland, head of the Department of Dairy
Husbandry, L.K. Metzger ’16, prominent local merchant, and
others whose names, unfortunately, are not remembered.

– L.K. Metzger owned one of the two bookstores downtown
that bought and sold textbooks. Under his ownership, Metzger’s
provided part-time work for many AZ’s, especially during the
business rush at the beginning of each semester.
