(Dec. 2003)
By Arthur H. Keen ’68, Alumni Board President
During the summer, LandServ of Boalsburg, our general contractor, renovated the fraternity house. New electrical and telecommunication wiring and a fire suppression system (water sprinklers) were installed. The bathrooms were remodeled. On the second floor, the bathroom was moved to the old guest suite. (When the house was constructed, the original bathroom was located here.) The total square footage was increased by adding the hall closets to the bathroom. The old second-floor bathroom has become the new guest suite. On the third floor, the bathroom was enlarged by adding the test file room.
The renovations with architectural fees and asbestos removal cost about $313,000. This cost is about $87,000, under our original rough estimate of $400,000. We established a line of credit with PNC and have borrowed $150,000 against the line. If you have not been receiving reminders for your pledged capital campaign donation, please notify me. We would like to reduce our loan balance as quickly as possible.
The active solicitation portion of our capital campaign has ended with approximately $600,000 pledged. If you have not made a pledge and would like to do so, please contact me. We need to make additional improvements to the house: remodeling the first floor and repairing the roof.
The annual College of Agricultural Sciences Scholarship Banquet was held on October 21. Sixteen brothers and sisters attended the banquet. Receiving Alpha Zeta-sponsored scholarships were David Munsee ’04, Andrew Flinchbaugh ’05, Lauren King ’04, Megan Regula ’04, Nathan Schanbacher ’05, Jessica Worobey ’04 and Katherine Harwick ’05. Andrew Flinchbaugh ’05 was also awarded a scholarship by the national Lindley Hogg Dennis Memorial Scholarship. Alpha Zeta alumni attending were Roy Prescott ’58, Obie Snider ’50, Ed Fehnel ’54, David Beppler ’52, Alan Bair ’67 and me.
David Beppler did an excellent job chairing the scholarship committee again. Also serving on the committee were Jill Caldwell ’03, Joshua Hushon ’03, Nelson Rice ’87, the Reverend Jay Shaffer ’73 and Glenn Haney ’51.
The annual meeting is scheduled for April 24, 2004, the date of the annual Blue-White football game.
