What’s New with You?

Thank you to Eric Stoner ’70 for submitting the following…

“On November 24, 2010 Brazil’s Environment Minister presented me with an honorable mention award in the individual leadership category of Brazil’s most prestigious environment award, the Chico Mendes Award, named after the Amazon rubber-tapper leader murdered in 1988.

Here is the citation from the award:

“For the past 20 years Eric Royer Stoner has been manager of the United States Agency for International Development Environment Program (USAID) in Brazil. In his position he helped identify and catalyze sustainable forest management initiatives involving research, policy analysis, and support for capacity building and education, principally in the Amazon region. He was a pioneer in supporting research on reduced-impact forest management, which limits damage to the forest and permits future timber harvest. This work helped demonstrate the economic viability of reduced-impact forest management, influenced timber companies, and trained thousands of technicians in the techniques of sustainable forest management.”
